Which patients benefit from the surgical treatment of morbid obesity?

The most commonly used method today to determine the degree of obesity is Body Mass Index (BMI) (Body Mass Index (BMI) or English Body Mass Index (BMI))_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b-136cccde78cf58 can be expressed as -3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_   _cc781905-5cde_cc781905cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ _cc781905cf58d__cc781905-cc19cf58d_1365c The result in kg/m2 obtained by dividing the square of the height in meters by the body weight in kilograms gives us the BMI value. For example, the BMI of a person weighing 100 kg and height of 2 m  is 100 kg/(2 m x  2 m) = 25 kg/m2. According to this classification:

Today, the internationally accepted criterion for the planning of surgical treatment of morbid obesity is the BMI value. Although there are teams that make the surgical decision by stretching the limits of use of this value or other criteria, these are not the rules accepted by the majority in the international arena and included in the guides of the relevant professional organizations.

Based on BMI, patients with a BMI of 40 and above are candidates for surgical treatment without any other justification. It is very difficult for these patients to achieve and maintain a healthy weight with non-surgical treatment methods (diet, sports, lifestyle changes) (average 3%). Despite everything, although it is possible to lose weight with a strict program under the supervision of a physician before surgery, these patients can be treated surgically to a large extent.

In the presence of the diseases listed above that co-occur with obesity or worsen with obesity, the threshold value for BMI becomes 35. Diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome etc. People with diseases such as BMI benefit from surgical treatment if their BMI is 35 and above.

In summary, patients benefit from surgical treatment if their BMI is over 40, regardless of the presence of disease, or if their BMI is over 35 in the presence of concomitant disease.
